For those who are unprepared for anxiety

So the truth of the matter is, we are in the midst of a scary time. As I mentioned in my previous blog post, I am not feeling particularly anxious. I’m attributing this to the fact that I think in patterns and am always preparing for all the scenarios. What about the other types of thinkers though? How can we help manage and alleviate some of the anxiety you are facing?

Disneyworld is closed. Sports are canceled. Lots of our local businesses are closed. There are some areas of our country on total lockdown. America is on the path to enter a recession.

That being said, this too shall pass and I am empathetic to those who are having a hard time weathering that storm right now. As an autistic individual, I have a whole lot of experience dealing with anxiety… and I happen to have a special interest in this particular topic and situation. Quite the cocktail! Let’s talk about that a little bit and offer some suggestions to help alleviate some of those feelings.

  • First and foremost, understand that your anxiety is real, normal, and it is okay. What is happening right now is not normal and it is okay to react to that. Seeing your investments go down is a scary thing. Be compassionate with yourself. Take care of yourself by doing things like getting fresh air outside, sleeping, meditating (there are great apps for that! We love Headspace.), and eating well.
  • Try to stay away from only thinking about the extreme ends of where we are right now. It is very likely that where things will end up is somewhere in the middle of “everything is perfectly fine” and “everything is doomed”. It is my job to account for those, and I am doing that for you!
  • Maintain perspective by being wary of the sources you are using to take in your information. Try not to let what everyone is saying on social media completely overtake your life. Try to keep to stable, reliable sources for your news and better yet, come to us when you have real questions.
  • Try to move away from taking in the media and do things that make you happy. Take breaks. Visual thinkers—pick up a paintbrush and make something, do some Pinterest DIYs, create something! Music and math thinkers – now is a great time to start making all those playlists you swore you would make, pick up an instrument, sing, and dance. Read a book! Binge-watch Netflix—whatever it is that will keep your mind occupied and relaxed.
  • Understand, this is why we have spent so much time making plans! We write financial plans so that we can account for lots of different situations and create a trajectory for different types of situations. Don’t have a financial plan yet? That’s what I’m here for. Let’s talk.
  • Reach out to the people who will help lift you up (and maybe stay away from those who won’t). Maybe now isn’t the time to talk to your favorite conspiracy theorist friend. That is okay! Thanks to all of our digital resources, communication options are available in so many different ways. Communicate with the people who make you happy. Now is a perfect time to cut away from texts and try Facetime or even shudder phone calls with the people you enjoy.

Your feelings are absolutely valid and normal. That being said, they are also temporary. This will pass. Feel free to reach out to us with any questions you may have. We are in this together!
